The Backwater is an age-old design. Designed by David Sintez in New Orleans. Dave designed hundreds of boats, I believe he had over 600 different designs under his belt and design did work for coast guard vessels and other government boats as well as hundreds of commercial fishing boats and pleasure boats. My father and I started Layton’s Boatworks in 1999 and we did only repair work for some time until 2002 and we built our first 40-foot Sport fisher. It was designed by David, we went on to build several of his designs a few 45s and a 50-footer and then started building the Layton Bay, all designed by Dave. One day when I was at his shop in New Orleans and I saw the 16, I Immediately fell in love with it. I bought one from Dave and brought it back to Edenton rigged it with a 50 horse Yamaha and ran it for several years. I was always blown away but it's performance. I've never been on a boat 16 foot that could perform the way this one does. I ended up selling it and I really regretted it. I always wanted another one, but Dave's health was not good, and he was no longer building any boats. He ended up passing away and the molds for his 16 got bought by one of his other boat builders. I did a little research and found out who had them and it ended up being a guy already knew that I met at Dave's shop one day. A few months ago, I decided to give him a call. I had made arrangements with him to buy 16’s from him have them shipped to Edenton and rig them out here as a dealer. We decided to name it the back water. We are very proud to sell them. They are lifetime boats that are build rot proof, no wood to go bad and a construction that will last generations.
